Depp spent the cash at the popular Indian restaurant Varanasi on Broad Street, which he hired out in its entirety to have dinner with close friend Beck, their entourage and bodyguards. Depp is currently on tour in the UK with friend Beck. The luxury 20,000 square foot restaurant closed its doors to the public so it could host the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star on Sunday evening.
Depp, who was recently awarded $15 million (a little over Rs 116 crore) in damages from ex-wife Amber Heard after winning his defamation case, enjoyed a sit-down meal of shish kebab, chicken tikka, marinated king prawns, and vegetable samosas followed by lamb karahi, chicken tikka masala, king prawn bhuna and raspberry cheesecake and panna cotta for dessert.
Mohammed Hussain, the British-Bangladeshi operations director of the restaurant, which opened six years ago, told TOI that 22 people in total came who ordered the banquet menu.
He said the group had champagne, cocktails and red and white wine and Bollywood music played in the background. “We were not told the reason of the event. We just knew he was on tour and was staying in a Birmingham hotel and wanted to have a restaurant meal. He hired out the whole restaurant,” he said. He would not confirm the cost of the meal and said it was tailored to Depp’s requirements but local media estimated the figure at £50,000 (Rs 48 lakh). Hussain confirmed Depp gave generous tips.
It is not the first time the restaurant has hosted A-listers. The Indian cricket team and Bollywood stars such as Gulshan Grover have also dined there. “He was in the restaurant for five hours and he was really relaxed, humble and accommodating. My three daughters spent time with him and so did my staff members. He hugged us and made everyone feel part of it. We did not discuss the court case. We just congratulated him on his victory,” Hussain said.
