SRINAGAR: Four terrorists, including two from Pakistan, were killed in two ongoing J&K encounters on Sunday. While two Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists from Pakistan were shot dead in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, two local terrorists were slain in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, police said.
Based on information from an arrested terrorist, Showkat Ahmed Shaikh, a joint team of the Army along with Kupwara Police launched a cordon-and-search operation in the forests of Chandigam Lolab. While searching a suspected hideout, the holed-up terrorists opened fire at the security forces, who retaliated. In the ensuing gun battle, two LeT terrorists from Pakistan were killed while the arrested terrorist, Showkat, also got trapped, IGP (Kashmir Range) Vijay Kumar said, adding that a fierce firefight was still underway in the area.
Meanwhile, around 3.30pm, a joint team of the Army and Kulgam Police launched a cordon-and-search operation in Kulgam’s DH Pora area based on intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists there. A heavy exchange of fire ensued after the holed-up terrorists were cornered with CRPF later joining the operation, the IGP said. Two local terrorists — identified as Haris Sharief of Srinagar and Zakir Padder of Kulgam — were killed in the gunfight, which continued till the time of going to press.
Police said Haris belonged to LeT while Zakir was affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad. Both were C-category terrorists involved in several terror crimes including attacks on security establishments as well as civilian atrocities. Haris had been missing since May 26. He was earlier arrested by Awantipora Police in 2020 for providing shelter and logistic support to LeT and assisting active LeT terrorists in Pulwama district’s Pampore, Khrew and Kakapora areas.
In another development on Sunday, three overground workers associated with the proscribed Al-Badr outfit were arrested with arms and ammunition from Kupwara’s Handwara area by a joint team of the Army, CRPF and police manning a checkpoint at Wangam crossing. One pistol, magazines, eight rounds and two hand grenades were seized from the trio, police said, adding that a case under UAPA has been registered at Kralgund PS in this connection.
“By targeting innocent civilians including women and kids, unarmed policemen and poor migrant labourers, terrorists can’t deter our efforts to bring peace in the Valley. Our counter-terror operations will continue simultaneously in all three regions of Kashmir Valley, especially against foreign terrorists,” IGP Kumar said.
