BENGALURU: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday set a 40-month deadline for the BJP-led “double engine” government to decongest the Bengaluru traffic by implementing various infrastructure projects to which he laid foundation stones at an event held in Kommaghatta near Kengeri.
He told a gathering that discussions about providing rail links to the parts of Bengaluru were being held from the 1980s, but there no efforts to implement it.
“Forty years have gone by only in discussion and you will be surprised to know the fact that this project was stuck in files for about sixteen years. But, I will promise the people of Bengaluru that I will work hard to complete these projects in forty months and fulfil their dreams,” said Modi.
He said he has got the opportunity to complete the project which was hanging in fire, adding that had the project been implemented forty years ago, then the Bengaluru city would have been developed better and it would have grown stronger.
He said the “double engine” government- a single party BJP running both the Centre and state government- is leveraging all possible means including road infrastructure, rail, metro, underpass in order to get Bengaluru a respite from the traffic woes.
He said he was inaugurating and laying foundation stones for the projects with cumulative cost of Rs 27,000 crore and these projects would help in realising ease of living and ease of doing business. The list included laying foundation stones to Rs 15,767 crore Bengaluru suburban rail project and multi-modal logistic park being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 7,231crore and inauguration of state-of-art Sir M Visvesvaraya Railway Terminal that has been gentrified at the cost Rs 314 crore and 100% electrification of Konkan railway line. The PM also laid foundation stones to five national highways projects including a satellite ring road that links Tumkur to Old Madras Road and bypasses the heavy industrial traffic.
Modi said Bengaluru is the city of dreams for lakhs of youth of the country, it is the reflection of the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. “Development of Bengaluru is nurturing lakhs of dreams. That’s why in the last 8 years the central government is relentlessly working to augment the capabilities of Bengaluru” he added.
Speaking about the startup ecosystem of Bengaluru, the PMsaid the city was a success story of the 21st century that inspired Atmanirbhar Bharat. “This city has already shown the ability of youth, entrepreneurship, innovation and private-sector involvement. It is a city of dreams and it teaches the people to change their mindsets about the private sector and its contribution to economic development,” he said.
Speaking earlier in the event, chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said the projects launched by Modi will see Karnataka’s GSDP (gross state domestic product) going up by 2%.
“Today is the day that deserves to be written in golden letters in the development history of the state. The suburban rail project was in limbo for a long time and the PM has turned it into reality. The project would provide commuting connectivity for the people from the heart of the city to various areas in the outskirts in all four directions. The multi-modal Logistic Park coming up in Tumkur will connect 5 states to Karnataka,” Bommai said.
